The place is beautiful. If you just want to see the waterfall take the trail directly behind the picnic table area that goes to the left (North) and keep going that direction. At the first fork which isn't far take the left. You can usually hear the waterfall if there has been a recent rain. If you want a more challenging hike , take the trail near the colleges fields on the right (South side) & keep to that side. It will take you up some fairly steep rugged hills and around the top in the back side of the park and back towards the North. However, if it has recently rained it can be a bit muddy on the trek down so just be prepared for that. I have seen plenty of deer, turkey, birds, turtles, snail, squirrels & groundhogs out here over the years. You just have to keep your eyes open. Lots of joggers and walkers like to use the trails so please be courteous. The park is cared for for by volunteers. Please be prepared to take your trash out with you. There are trash cans some picnic tables and a small grill located at the front where the small parking lot is located.
Absolute gem. I went yesterday (7/27) after all the rain that KC had and it was a beautiful sight. Did a 6 mile run and the whole area was so alive with life. The waterfall was rushing so fast.. an old guy who was there told me in the 27 years he's been coming that was the fastest it's ever gone. My first time actually seeing it, it was so awesome. wish i could ride my bike here, but makes sense why it wouldn't work that well...
I had a wonderful time here. My trip ended with being arrested by the police for having an unpaid speeding ticket, but prior to that I had a great time exploring the trails and digging around nature. The original Parkville "jail" is here, which is really just a silly looking pen that could only house supposedly one person. I also found an old dry root cellar in the middle of nowhere. There's an excellent shelter here surrounded by woods that's cared for by one of the local Boy Scout Troops. The trails are well cared for. There's also a bulletin board posted at the entrance where you can learn more about events happening there and the history of the area. It was well worth the drive, and I can't wait to take another trip!
This is my favorite sanctuary in the area. Definitely take the Old Kate trail if it is your first time. It is the perfect place to feel totally serene. The waterfall is AMAZING, and is truly in its full glory after a recent rain. The sanctuary has so many interesting features and different trails. Very picturesque. Lots of water systems. It is quite the nature haven. You’ll get addicted to this place!
A beautiful park where you can read, walk , play with your children. It was kept clean. I will be back.
NO BIKE TRAILS & NO DOGS ALLOWED - Keep that in mind before you travel with you furry companions. These are simply walking/hiking/jogging/nature watching trails.
